Lois Diane Harper Walsh is a retired researcher for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Originally trained as a materials scientist, she later became branch chief for advanced computing at the AFRL Rome Laboratory in Rome, New York.
She earned a master's degree from Syracuse University in 1984, with a thesis titled Microstructural Characterization of Copper Films Deposited in Titanium Substrates, and completed a Ph.D. in solid state science at Syracuse in 1989. Her doctoral dissertation, The Interaction of Polycrystalline Copper Films with Dilute Aqueous Solutions of Cupric Chloride, was supervised by James A. Schwarz.
In 2005, Walsh was named an IEEE Fellow "for leadership in electronic device reliability." At that time, she served as branch chief for advanced computing at the Rome Laboratory, overseeing a team of approximately 30 staff researchers. Her work encompassed device reliability using innovative surface analysis and diagnostic techniques, as well as high-performance computing, quantum computing, and biologically inspired nanotechnology.
Lois Walsh (painter and educator)
Lois Walsh is an American painter and educator based in Red Hook, New York. She is known for oil and acrylic works inspired by 17th- and 18th-century French paintings, particularly the interplay between figures and landscapes.
She graduated with high honors from Douglass College at Rutgers University with a B.A. in 1980 and earned an M.F.A. from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1987. She taught art history at Marist College from 1988 to 2024 and at Dutchess Community College from 1991 to 2018, in addition to teaching drawing and painting courses at various institutions.
Her exhibition history includes solo shows such as Non Finito at 51 Fulton Gallery in Poughkeepsie, New York (2017) and Arcadian Dreams at the CCE Agroforestry Center in Acra, New York (2025), as well as numerous group exhibitions in the Hudson Valley region.
