Cornelius "Loek" Johannes Alflen (31 August 1933 – 29 October 2015) was a Dutch professional footballer who played as a defender, primarily as a left-back. He is best known for his time with AFC Ajax and for representing the Netherlands national team.
Early Life and Career
Born in Amsterdam, Alflen began his football career in the youth ranks of his local club, AFC Ajax. He progressed through the academy, showcasing defensive capabilities that earned him a place in the senior squad.
Club Career
AFC Ajax (1952–1961)
Alflen made his senior debut for AFC Ajax in 1952. He quickly established himself as a reliable and tenacious left-back. His career at Ajax spanned a pivotal period for Dutch football, as the sport transitioned from amateurism to professionalism. Alflen was a key player in the Ajax team that won the Eredivisie title in the 1956–57 season, the club's first national championship in the professional era, and again in the 1959–60 season.
During his tenure with Ajax, Alflen played a significant role, contributing to the club's developing professional identity. He appeared in a total of 180 league matches for Ajax, scoring 2 goals. He was known for his solid defensive work and consistent performances.
SC Enschede (1961–1964)
In 1961, Alflen transferred to SC Enschede, where he continued his professional career for three seasons. He maintained his reputation as a dependable defender before retiring from professional football in 1964.
International Career
Loek Alflen earned one cap for the Netherlands national team, known as Oranje. His sole international appearance came on 28 September 1958, in an away match against Belgium, which ended in a 3-2 victory for the Netherlands.
Legacy and Death
Alflen is remembered as a sturdy defender of the post-war generation who helped shape the early professional era of Dutch football. He passed away on 29 October 2015, at the age of 82.
