Lobocarcinus is an extinct genus of decapod crustaceans belonging to the infraorder Brachyura (true crabs). The genus is known from fossil specimens that have been recovered primarily from Cretaceous and Paleogene marine deposits in Europe and North America.

  • †Lobocarcinus acutidens – Characterized by sharply pointed anterolateral spines.
  • †Lobocarcinus crassus – Notable for a comparatively thick carapace.
  • †Lobocarcinus stewarti – Known from well‑preserved specimens in the Paleogene deposits of North America.

Taxonomic revisions are ongoing, and some species previously assigned to Lobocarcinus have been re‑evaluated in other genera as new morphological data become available.

Paleoecological Significance

The presence of Lobocarcinus in both Cretaceous and early Cenozoic marine sediments provides insight into the evolutionary persistence of cancrid lineages across the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary. Their morphological adaptations, such as robust chelae, imply a benthic, predatory or scavenging lifestyle within soft‑sediment habitats.

Research History

The genus was first described in the early 20th century based on European fossil material. Subsequent discoveries in North America expanded the known geographic range and prompted comparative studies on morphological variation between Old World and New World representatives.
