Lobo, Cameroon

Lobo is a town and rural commune situated in the Lekié department of Cameroon’s Centre Region. It lies approximately 35 km west‑northwest of Yaoundé, the national capital, at geographic coordinates 3°53′30″ N, 11°13′49″ E.

Administrative status
Lobo functions as an arrondissement (sub‑division) and commune within the administrative hierarchy of Cameroon. It is one of nine communes that make up the Lekié department.

Geography and area
The commune covers an area of about 302.4 km². The terrain is characterised by gently undulating plateaus at elevations between 600 and 800 metres, with smooth‑rocky hills, convex slopes, swampy valleys, and ferrallitic soils derived from underlying metamorphic rocks such as gneisses and micaschists.

Population
According to the 2005 national census, Lobo had a population of 10,157 inhabitants, yielding a population density of roughly 33.6 persons per square kilometre. The settlement is predominantly rural, with about 89 % of residents living in rural localities.

Climate
Lobo experiences a humid tropical climate (Köppen Aw), with a pronounced wet season from March to November and a dry season from December to February. Average annual temperatures range from 22 °C to 30 °C, and total annual rainfall is typically between 1,500 mm and 2,000 mm.

Economy and land use
The area’s climate and soils support agriculture, including the cultivation of plantains, yams, cassava, and other subsistence crops. The presence of swampy valleys and riverine systems contributes to local hydrology and offers potential for limited fishing and small‑scale irrigation.

Geology
Lobo lies within the Neoproterozoic Yaoundé Group of the Central African Mobile Zone. The region’s metamorphic bedrock and alluvial sediments are known to contain heavy minerals such as rutile, indicating modest mineral‑exploration potential.

Transportation
The town is located along the Nationale No 3 highway, which connects it directly to Yaoundé and other settlements in the Centre Region.
