Definition
Lliswerry (Welsh: Llyswyry), also known as Liswerry, is an electoral ward and community within the city of Newport, South Wales, United Kingdom. It is administered by Newport City Council and constitutes the largest community/ward by population in the city.
Overview
Located on the eastern side of the River Usk, Lliswerry encompasses residential, educational, and recreational areas. According to the 2021 United Kingdom census, the ward had a population of approximately 12,069 residents. The area includes a range of amenities such as primary and secondary schools, a college campus (Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus, commonly referred to as “Nash College”), churches, a post office, a medical centre, and the Newport International Sports Village. The ward is bounded by the River Usk to the west, the Great Western main railway line to the north, and a series of streets including Nash Road and Traston Road to the south and east.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Lliswerry” is an anglicised form of the Welsh Llyswyry, which translates to “Maiden’s Court” (llys meaning “court” and wyry derived from gwyryf → wyryf → wyry, meaning “maiden”). Local tradition links the name to a historic manor house that is believed to have belonged to a Welsh king of Brycheiniog, with the manor possibly situated near present‑day Traston Road.
