Liujiang District (Chinese: 柳江区; pinyin: Liǔjiāng Qū) is a district under the administration of Liuzhou, Guangxi, China. It is located south of the urban core of Liuzhou and serves as a significant suburban and agricultural area for the city.
History
Historically, the area was known as Liujiang County (柳江县). It has a long administrative history within Guangxi. In February 2016, with the approval of the State Council, Liujiang County was officially abolished and re-established as Liujiang District, becoming a direct administrative division of Liuzhou City. This change aimed to better integrate the area into Liuzhou's urban development plans and expand the city's administrative boundaries.
Geography
Liujiang District is situated in the central part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, bordering the main urban districts of Liuzhou to the north. The district covers an area of approximately 2,518 square kilometers (972 sq mi). Its terrain is generally characterized by hills and plains, with the Liujiang River (a major tributary of the Liu River) flowing through it, contributing to its fertile agricultural land. The climate is subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters, experiencing abundant rainfall throughout the year.
Administration
As a district, Liujiang is a subdivision of the prefecture-level city of Liuzhou. It is governed by a district people's government, which oversees local affairs including economic development, social services, and urban planning. The district comprises several towns and townships, each further subdivided into villages and residential communities.
Demographics
As of the 2020 Chinese Census, the population of Liujiang District was approximately 614,942. The ethnic composition is predominantly Han Chinese, but like other areas in Guangxi, it also has a significant population of Zhuang and other ethnic minority groups.
Economy
The economy of Liujiang District is a blend of agriculture and developing industry. Agriculture remains a cornerstone, with major crops including rice, sugarcane, and various fruits. The district is known for its agricultural products which supply Liuzhou and surrounding areas. In recent years, Liujiang has also seen the development of light industries, manufacturing, and processing plants, often benefiting from its proximity to Liuzhou's industrial base and transportation networks. Service industries are also growing to support the local population.
Transportation
Liujiang District is well-connected to the rest of Liuzhou and Guangxi through a network of roads and railways. Major national highways and provincial roads pass through the district, facilitating logistics and passenger travel. Its location adjacent to Liuzhou's main urban area provides residents and businesses with access to Liuzhou Bailian Airport and major railway lines, including the high-speed rail network.
