Little Man, What Now? (1934 film) is an American pre-Code drama film directed by Frank Borzage, based on the 1932 novel Little Man, What Now? by German author Hans Fallada.
The film stars Margaret Sullavan and Douglass Montgomery as Emma "Lämmchen" Pinneberg and Johannes "Pinneberg" Pinneberg, a young couple struggling to survive in Weimar Germany during the period of economic hardship and rising Nazism. The story follows their challenges as they face unemployment, poverty, and social pressures after Emma becomes pregnant and they marry. Pinneberg has difficulty holding down jobs, and they face constant financial struggles, made worse by the oppressive social and political climate. They are often forced to rely on the kindness of others, although that is not always available.
The film, while adapted from the source material, takes certain liberties with the original novel's plot and tone. It is considered a Hollywood interpretation of a German story, and its depiction of the growing Nazi threat is somewhat muted compared to the novel. Nevertheless, it remains a significant work in its own right, offering a poignant portrayal of economic hardship and the challenges faced by ordinary people during a turbulent period in history.
