List of presidents of Bulgaria (1990–present)

This article lists the individuals who have served as President of Bulgaria since the re-establishment of the office in 1990 following the end of the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The President of Bulgaria is the head of state, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and guarantor of the constitution. The presidential term is five years, with a maximum of two terms allowed.

Presidents of Bulgaria (1990 – Present)

  • Petar Mladenov (April 3, 1990 – July 6, 1990). Mladenov was the first president after the end of communist rule. He resigned amidst protests related to his past actions during the communist regime.

  • Zhelyu Zhelev (August 1, 1990 – January 22, 1997). Zhelev was initially elected by the Grand National Assembly and later won the first direct presidential election in 1992.

  • Petar Stoyanov (January 22, 1997 – January 22, 2002). Stoyanov served one term and oversaw Bulgaria's preparations for NATO membership.

  • Georgi Parvanov (January 22, 2002 – January 22, 2012). Parvanov was the first president to be re-elected, serving two consecutive terms.

  • Rosen Plevneliev (January 22, 2012 – January 22, 2017). Plevneliev's presidency focused on economic development and European integration.

  • Rumen Radev (January 22, 2017 – Present). Radev is the current president of Bulgaria, re-elected for a second term in 2022.
