List of computer systems from Yugoslavia

The development of computer systems in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) spanned several decades, from early vacuum-tube mainframes in the 1960s to home and educational computers in the 1980s. These systems were produced by various state-owned enterprises and institutes across the Yugoslav republics.

Early and Mainframe Systems

Beginning in the late 1950s, Yugoslav institutes, primarily the Mihajlo Pupin Institute in Belgrade, began developing indigenous computing technology to reduce reliance on imported Western or Eastern Bloc hardware.

  • CER (Cifarski Elektronski Računar): A series of early computers developed at the Mihajlo Pupin Institute.
    • CER-10: Completed in 1960, it was one of the first digital computers in Continental Europe. It utilized vacuum tubes and transistors.
    • CER-20, CER-22, CER-200: Later models used for business and mathematical tasks.
  • TIM Series: Developed in the 1980s at the Mihajlo Pupin Institute, these were more advanced systems intended for institutional use.
    • TIM-100: A workstation designed for postal and office automation.
    • TIM-011: A microcomputer used primarily in educational settings.

Home and Educational Computers

During the 1980s, a movement toward domestic microcomputing led to the production of several systems designed for schools and hobbyists.

  • Galaksija: A build-it-yourself home computer designed by Voja Antonić in 1983. It gained significant popularity due to its low cost and the availability of instructions in the "Računari u vašoj kući" (Computers in your home) magazine.
  • Orao (Eagle): Developed by PEL Varaždin in the early 1980s, it became the standard computer in many schools in the SR Croatia. It featured a 6502 processor and 16 KB or 32 KB of RAM.
  • Galeb (Seagull): The predecessor to the Orao, also developed by PEL Varaždin.
  • Pecom 32 and Pecom 64: Developed by Elektronska Industrija (EI) Niš, these systems utilized the RCA 1802 CPU.
  • Lola 8: Developed by the Ivo Lola Ribar Institute in Belgrade, this computer was originally designed as a controller for industrial machinery but was also adapted for educational use.
  • Ivel Z3 and Ivel Ultra: Produced by Ivasim, these systems were largely compatible with the Apple II architecture.

Industrial and Business Systems

Several companies focused on providing computing power for large-scale enterprise and administrative needs.

  • Iskra Delta: Based in Slovenia, Iskra Delta produced several high-performance systems for the time.
    • Delta 340: Based on the DEC PDP-11 architecture.
    • Delta 800: A system utilizing the Motorola 68000 processor.
    • Triglav: A multi-processor workstation designed for business and scientific applications.
  • IRIS (Institute for Computer and Information Systems): A division of Energoinvest in Sarajevo that produced systems like the IRIS 8, which was based on the Intel 8085 processor and used in professional environments.

Technical Limitations and Market Context

Most Yugoslav computer systems were developed behind high customs barriers designed to encourage domestic production. While some systems were original designs (such as the Galaksija), others were based on existing architectures (such as the Apple II or DEC PDP-11 clones). Production largely ceased following the economic instability of the late 1980s and the subsequent dissolution of Yugoslavia.
