Description
Lissotesta arenosa is a minute marine gastropod, often referred to as a micromollusk. Shells typically reach a maximum height of 1–2 mm, are thin, translucent, and display a smooth, slightly sculptured surface. The species epithet “arenosa” (from Latin arenosus, meaning “sandy”) reflects the fine granular texture observed on the shell in some specimens.
Distribution
The species is recorded from the Southern Ocean, particularly in sub‑Antarctic and Antarctic waters. Specimens have been collected off the coasts of New Zealand’s southern islands and around the Kerguelen Plateau. Exact range limits are not comprehensively mapped.
Habitat
Lissotesta arenosa inhabits marine benthic environments, typically residing on or within fine sand and muddy substrates at depths ranging from the shallow sublittoral zone (≈20 m) to deeper offshore waters (≈500 m). Like other members of the genus, it is presumed to feed on microalgae and detritus.
Ecology
Due to its small size and deep‑water occurrence, detailed ecological data are limited. The species is presumed to play a role in the recycling of organic material within its benthic community.
Reproduction
Information on the reproductive biology of L. arenosa is not specifically documented; however, related vetigastropods are generally gonochoristic (separate sexes) and release planktonic larvae.
Conservation Status
The species has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its occurrence in remote, low‑impact marine areas suggests no immediate known threats, but data deficiency precludes a definitive assessment.
