Lionheart (American band)

Lionheart is an American beatdown hardcore band from Oakland, California. Formed in 2004, the band is known for its aggressive, groove-heavy sound blending hardcore punk and heavy metal, with influences from Hatebreed, Blood for Blood, Madball, and Terror.

History

Lionheart was formed in 2004 in Oakland, California, by vocalist Rob Watson and drummer Jay Scott. The band released their debut EP, This Means War, in 2006 via I Scream Records, followed by their debut full-length album The Will to Survive on September 2, 2007, through Westcoast Worldwide Records. The album was re-released in 2008 via I Scream Records with bonus material.

After signing with Mediaskare Records, Lionheart released their second studio album Built on Struggle on January 8, 2011, and the follow-up Undisputed on May 8, 2012. The EP Welcome to the West Coast was released on January 14, 2014, via Fast Break Entertainment, debuting at number one on the iTunes and Google Play metal charts.

Between July and September 2011, the band toured with I Declare War. In January 2012, they toured Europe as part of the Persistence Tour alongside Biohazard and Suicidal Tendencies. In 2015, they participated in the Taste of Anarchy Tour with Nasty and Coldburn, and played festivals including Ieperfest (Belgium), Traffic Jam Open Air, and Summerblast Festival (Germany).

In early 2016, Lionheart released their fourth studio album Love Don't Live Here via Beatdown Hardwear Records. On May 26, 2016, the band announced their breakup, citing the challenges of balancing touring with family and career obligations. They embarked on a farewell tour across Europe, including appearances at With Full Force, Vainstream Rockfest, and Free & Easy Festival.

After approximately one year, the band reunited in 2017 following an invitation from Belgian hardcore band Nasty for a European tour. They released Welcome to the West Coast II in November 2017, followed by Valley of Death in 2019 via Arising Empire. The live album Live at Summer Breeze was released in 2020. Welcome to the West Coast III was released on December 9, 2022, through Arising Empire, produced by Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) and mixed by Will Putney. The band's eighth studio album, Valley of Death II, is scheduled for release in 2026.

Musical Style

Lionheart's music is classified as beatdown hardcore with metalcore elements. Their sound is characterized by heavy breakdowns, dual guitar attack with chugging rhythmic patterns, fast-paced groove-oriented drumming, and raw, aggressive vocals. The band's early work was described as hardcore punk-rooted metalcore, drawing comparisons to Hatebreed, Terror, and Cro-Mags. Lyrically, the band focuses on themes of personal struggle, resilience, street life, and West Coast identity.
