Definition
Lionel Herbert Dahmer (born July 30 1936) is an American chemist, former high‑school teacher, and author, most widely recognized as the father of convicted serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
Overview
Lionel Dahmer was born in Madison, Wisconsin, to a family of German‑American descent. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1958 and completed a Ph.D. in chemistry at the same institution in 1961. Following his doctoral studies, Dahmer worked as a research chemist for several industrial firms, including a tenure at the Dow Chemical Company. In the late 1960s he transitioned to education, teaching chemistry at the high‑school level in West Allis, Wisconsin, and later at the Milwaukee County Technical College.
In 1961, Dahmer married Joyce Flint; the couple had two children, Jeff (born 1960) and Lisa (born 1966). After Jeff Dahmer’s arrest and subsequent conviction for a series of murders in 1991, Lionel Dahmer became a public figure, giving interviews and speaking about his experiences as a parent of a notorious criminal. In 1994 he published A Father’s Story, a memoir that recounts his family life, his son’s early behavior, and his efforts to understand and come to terms with Jeff’s crimes.
