Lionel Rouwen Aingimea (born 1965) is a Nauruan lawyer and politician who served as the 15th President of Nauru from 2019 to 2022. He has also represented the Meneng Constituency in the Parliament of Nauru.
Early Life and Education
Lionel Aingimea pursued higher education at the University of the South Pacific, where he studied law. Prior to his political career, he worked extensively in the legal field within Nauru. His professional experience includes serving as a public defender for the government, holding a position as a magistrate, and practicing as a private barrister. He also dedicated time to academia, working as a lecturer at the University of the South Pacific.
Political Career
Member of Parliament
Aingimea first entered national politics when he was elected to the Parliament of Nauru in the 2013 general election, representing the Meneng Constituency. During this term, he was appointed as the Assistant Minister for Justice and Border Control under the administration of President Baron Waqa. He successfully secured re-election in the 2016 general election and continued to hold various ministerial portfolios within President Waqa's government.
Presidency (2019–2022)
Following the 2019 general election, Lionel Aingimea was elected President of Nauru by his fellow Members of Parliament on 27 August 2019. In a secret ballot, he defeated his opponent David Adeang by a vote of 12 to 6. During his presidency, Aingimea's administration focused on several key areas, including enhancing anti-corruption efforts, promoting national development initiatives, and maintaining Nauru's diplomatic relations on the international stage.
His term coincided with the global COVID-19 pandemic, during which Nauru implemented strict border controls and public health measures to safeguard the island nation from the virus. He continued Nauru's established foreign policy, including strong ties with its diplomatic allies such as Taiwan.
Post-Presidency
Aingimea sought re-election as President following the 2022 general election but was unsuccessful. On 28 September 2022, he was succeeded by Russ Kun. Despite losing the presidency, Aingimea continues to serve as a Member of Parliament for the Meneng Constituency.
