Lindsay Gaze (born 24 June 1935) is an Australian former basketball player, coach, and administrator, renowned for his contributions to the development of basketball in Australia and for coaching the national team at multiple international competitions.
Overview
Gaze began his senior playing career in the 1950s with the Melbourne-based club St Kilda, later moving to the Melbourne Basketball Club (now Melbourne Tigers). He represented Australia as a player in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the country's first participation in Olympic basketball. Transitioning to coaching, Gaze served as head coach of the Australian men's national basketball team (the Boomers) from 1971 to 1985, guiding the squad at three Olympic Games (1972, 1976, 1980) and two FIBA World Championships. Concurrently, he coached the Melbourne Tigers in the National Basketball League (NBL) from the league’s inaugural season in 1979 until his retirement in 1992, leading the team to its first NBL championship in 1993 as a consultant. Gaze’s coaching philosophy emphasized disciplined defense, team cohesion, and player development, influencing multiple generations of Australian basketball talent. He was inducted into the Basketball Australia Hall of Fame (2006) and the NBL Hall of Fame (2006). His son, Andrew Gaze, became one of Australia’s most celebrated basketball players.
