Limedale is an unincorporated community located in Greencastle Township, Putnam County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is positioned southwest of the city of Greencastle.
The community developed primarily as a result of its location at a significant railroad crossing. Historically, Limedale served as a junction between the Monon Railroad and the Vandalia Railroad (later part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system). This intersection facilitated the transport of goods and passengers through the region during the height of rail travel in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The name "Limedale" is attributed to the presence of local limestone deposits and the lime kilns that operated in the vicinity. The production of lime was a notable early industrial activity in the area.
Limedale is recognized by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as a populated place. As an unincorporated community, it does not have its own municipal government and is governed by the township and county authorities. While it was once a more active commercial hub centered around the railways, it is currently characterized by a mix of residential properties and agricultural land.
