Liliana Segre (born 10 September 1930) is an Italian Holocaust survivor, educator, and public figure who has served as a Senator for life in the Italian Senate since 2018.
Overview
Liliana Segre was born in Milan to a Jewish family. In 1944, at the age of 13, she was arrested by the Fascist Italian police and deported to Auschwitz concentration camp, where she survived until the camp’s liberation in 1945. After World War II, Segre pursued higher education, earning a law degree from the University of Milan. She later worked as a university professor, teaching literature and philosophy, and became involved in various organizations dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and education. In recognition of her contributions to public life and human rights, President Giorgio Napolitano appointed her as a Senator for life on 19 March 2018. Segre has been an outspoken advocate against anti‑Jewish hatred, Holocaust denial, and all forms of discrimination.
