Likert scale

The Likert scale is a psychometric response format commonly used in questionnaires and surveys to measure attitudes, opinions, or perceived frequencies. It presents respondents with a statement and asks them to indicate their level of agreement or disagreement using a symmetric, graded series of options, typically ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The scale can also be adapted for frequency (e.g., never to always) or intensity (e.g., not at all to extremely).

Historical Development
The scale is named after American social psychologist Rensis Likert (1903–1981), who introduced it in a 1932 article titled “A Technique for the Measurement of Attitudes.” Likert proposed a four-point response format to avoid a neutral middle option, although modern implementations often use five- or seven-point versions.

Structure and Variants

  • Number of Points: Common configurations include 4, 5, 7, or 9 points. A higher number of points can increase granularity but may also raise respondent fatigue.
  • Directionality: Scales may be unipolar (e.g., from “not at all” to “extremely”) or bipolar (e.g., from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree”).
  • Labeling: Some designs label only the extreme anchors, while others label each intermediate point.

Scoring and Analysis
Responses are typically assigned numerical values (e.g., 1–5) for quantitative analysis. Researchers may treat the resulting data as:

  • Ordinal: Recognizing only the order of responses without assuming equal intervals.
  • Interval: Assuming equal distances between points, permitting calculations such as means and standard deviations. The interval assumption is common but debated among methodologists.
  • Composite Scores: Multiple Likert items targeting the same construct may be summed or averaged to form a scale score, improving reliability.

Reliability and Validity
When multiple items are combined, internal consistency reliability is often assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. Construct validity is evaluated through factor analysis and correlations with related measures.
