The Liepāja Lighthouse (Latvian: Liepājas bāka) is a maritime navigational aid situated on the coast of the city of Liepāja in western Latvia, on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. It marks the entrance to the Liepāja port and assists vessels navigating the surrounding waters.
Location
The lighthouse stands on the seafront promenade in Liepāja, near the historic Liepāja pier and the former central railway station area. Its coordinates place it directly adjacent to the Baltic Sea, offering visibility to ships approaching the port from the west.
History
Construction of the lighthouse began in the mid‑19th century as part of broader efforts to improve maritime safety along the Latvian coast. Construction and Appearance
The tower is an open‑work, skeletal structure made of riveted cast‑iron plates, a common design for Baltic Sea lighthouses of the period. It is painted in alternating red and white bands, a visual scheme intended to enhance daytime conspicuity against the sea and sky. The lantern room sits atop a steel framework and houses the light source.
Optical Characteristics
The light emitted by the Liepāja Lighthouse is a flashing white signal, with a nominal period of five seconds (Fl W 5 s). The nominal range of the light is approximately 12 nautical miles (≈22 km), providing sufficient warning to vessels operating in the vicinity of the Liepāja harbor.
Operational Status
The lighthouse remains active as an aid to navigation. It is integrated into Latvia’s automated lighthouse network, which is monitored remotely by the Latvian Maritime Administration. Routine maintenance is performed on a scheduled basis, and the structure is also a point of local cultural interest, featuring in city photographs and tourism literature.
Cultural Significance
Beyond its functional role, the Liepāja Lighthouse is recognized as a historic monument of the city. It is frequently depicted in postcards, postcards, and local promotional material, symbolising Liepāja’s maritime heritage. The lighthouse and its surrounding promenade are accessible to the public, and the site is sometimes used for cultural events and commemorations related to the city’s seafaring history.
