Lidingö Municipality

Lidingö Municipality (Swedish: Lidingö kommun) is a local government area in Stockholm County, Sweden. Situated on the island of Lidingö in the inner Stockholm archipelago, the municipality forms part of the Stockholm urban area and lies just east of central Stockholm, to which it is connected by several bridges and commuter rail lines.

Geography
The municipality covers an area of approximately 30 km², of which the majority is land, with a small proportion consisting of inland water bodies and coastal shoreline. Lidingö is bordered by the municipalities of Stockholm to the southwest and Danderyd to the north.

Demographics
As of the latest official statistics (2022), Lidingö Municipality had a population of roughly 49,000 inhabitants. The municipality is noted for having a relatively high average income and educational attainment compared with national averages, reflecting its status as one of the more affluent suburbs of Stockholm.

History
The island of Lidingö has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological finds indicating settlement during the Iron Age. Modern local administration began with the municipal reforms of 1862, when Lidingö was established as a rural municipality (landskommun). In 1900 it separated from the neighboring Täby municipality, and in 1926 it was granted the title of a city (stad). The 1971 Swedish municipal reform re‑classified Lidingö as a municipality (kommun), the designation it retains today.

Government and Politics
Lidingö Municipality is governed by a municipal council (kommunfullmäktige) consisting of 61 elected representatives, elected every four years in conjunction with the national parliamentary elections. The council appoints an executive committee (kommunstyrelse) and a municipal board (kommunalråd) responsible for day‑to‑day administration. Historically, the Moderate Party (Moderata samlingspartiet) has held a leading position in the municipal government, with the mayor (kommunstyrelsens ordförande) frequently drawn from that party.

Economy and Infrastructure
The local economy is diversified, encompassing residential services, small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises, and a notable concentration of research and development activities, particularly in the fields of information technology, telecommunications, and environmental technology. The municipality benefits from robust transport connections: the Lidingöbanan light‑rail line links the island directly to the Stockholm metro system, while multiple bridge routes (including the Lidingöbron) provide road access to central Stockholm.

Education and Culture
Lidingö Municipality administers a comprehensive public school system, including preschools, primary schools, and secondary schools. In addition, the municipality hosts several cultural institutions such as the Lidingö Museum, which presents local history and art exhibitions, and the Lidingö Art Association (Lidingö Konstförening), which promotes visual arts within the community.

International Relations
The municipality maintains sister‑city (twin town) relationships with several municipalities abroad, fostering cultural exchange and cooperation on municipal issues.
