Morphology

  • Libinia emarginata is a large brachyuran crab, reaching carapace widths of up to 15 cm (approximately 6 in).
  • The carapace is broadly oval with a finely granulated dorsal surface and a distinct emargination (notch) at the posterior margin, which gives the species its specific epithet “emarginata.”
  • The crab possesses long, slender walking legs (pereiopods) often exceeding the carapace length, bearing numerous spines and setae.
  • Chelipeds (claws) are asymmetrical; the larger claw is equipped with robust crushing teeth, while the smaller is more delicate.
  • The coloration is variable, ranging from mottled brown to gray, often covered with attached bits of algae, seaweed, and detritus that provide camouflage.

Distribution

  • Native to the western Atlantic Ocean.
  • Range extends from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, southward along the Atlantic coast of the United States, including the Gulf of Mexico, and into the Caribbean Sea.

Habitat

  • The species exhibits “decorating” behavior, actively attaching pieces of algae, sponge, and other materials to its exoskeleton using hooked setae; this behavior reduces predation risk.
  • Reproductive cycle: Mating occurs after the female molts. Females carry fertilized eggs on the pleopods until hatching. Larval development proceeds through several zoeal stages followed by a megalopa before settlement as juvenile crabs.
  • Known predators include fish (e.g., flatfish, cod), larger crabs, and cephalopods.

Human Interactions

  • Not a target of commercial fisheries due to relatively low market value.
  • Occasionally caught as bycatch in trawl and gillnet operations.
