Liberal, Oregon

Liberal, Oregon is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. It is located approximately five miles southeast of Canby and ten miles south of Oregon City, situated along Oregon Route 213.

History

The community of Liberal was founded in the late 19th century. Its name is particularly notable and stems from the political sentiments of its early settlers. The story goes that a group of politically liberal-leaning settlers established the community, intentionally naming it "Liberal" to reflect their views. This was reportedly done in contrast to a proposed or short-lived settlement nearby that was to be called "Conservative," although "Conservative" never developed into a significant or lasting community. A post office was established in Liberal on March 29, 1893, with Oscar D. Smith serving as the first postmaster.

Geography

Liberal is situated in the fertile farmlands of the northern Willamette Valley. It lies at an elevation of approximately 279 feet (85 m) above sea level. The community is rural in character, surrounded by agricultural land, primarily dedicated to farming and nurseries.
