Lička Plješivica

Lička Plješivica is a mountain ridge in the Dinaric Alps located in the Lika region of central Croatia. The ridge lies to the east of the larger Velebit mountain range and extends in a north‑west to south‑east direction, forming a natural barrier between the Lika river basin and the interior of the continent. The nearest urban centers are the towns of Gospić and Otočac.

Geography and Topography

  • The ridge is composed predominantly of Mesozoic limestone and exhibits typical karst features, such as sinkholes, fissures, and underground drainage systems.
  • The highest point of Lička Plješivica reaches an elevation of approximately 1,200 metres (about 3,937 ft) above sea level. Precise summit data are not uniformly reported in available sources.

Climate
Lička Plješivica experiences a sub‑Mediterranean climate with cold winters and warm, relatively dry summers. Elevation and karst topography influence local microclimates, often producing fog and rapid temperature changes.

Flora and Fauna
The ridge supports a mixed forest zone, primarily consisting of beech (Fagus sylvatica) and silver fir (Abies alba) at lower elevations, transitioning to dwarf pine (Pinus mugo) and open karst scrub higher up. Faunal species typical of the Dinaric Alps are present, including the brown bear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus), and red deer (Cervus elaphus). Birdlife includes several raptor species, such as the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

Protection and Conservation
Sections of Lička Plješivica fall within the boundaries of protected areas designated by the Croatian government, notably the Ličko‑Primorska Nature Park. These designations aim to preserve the ridge’s distinctive karst landscape, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

Human Use and Tourism
The ridge is a destination for outdoor recreation, offering marked hiking trails, mountain‑biking routes, and opportunities for wildlife observation. Local municipalities maintain trailheads and informational signage, promoting sustainable tourism while emphasizing the ecological sensitivity of the karst environment.

Cultural Significance
The name “Lička Plješivica” derives from the Croatian adjective “lička,” meaning “of Lika,” and “Plješivica,” a toponym traditionally associated with the ridge’s rugged appearance. The area has historically been inhabited by pastoral communities engaged in transhumant livestock farming, a practice that has shaped both the cultural landscape and traditional land‑use patterns.
