Lezhë District

Lezhë District (Albanian: Rrethi i Lezhës) was an administrative unit in northwestern Albania. It functioned as one of the 36 districts (rrethe) of the country until the nationwide administrative reform of 2000, which replaced districts with 12 counties (qark).

Geography

  • Location: Situated along the Adriatic Sea coast, the district lay within the territory of the present-day Lezhë County.
  • Borders: It was bordered by Shkodër District to the north, Mirditë District to the east, and Durrës District to the south.
  • Area: The district covered an area of approximately 479 km².

Administrative centre

  • The city of Lezhë served as the district’s administrative seat and principal urban centre.

Demographics

  • According to the 2001 Albanian census, the district had a population of about 130,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom identified as ethnic Albanians.

Economy and infrastructure

  • The district’s economy was diversified, with significant activities in agriculture (particularly olive and citrus cultivation), fishing, and small‑scale manufacturing.
  • Lezhë’s coastal position supported a modest port facilitating trade and transport.

Historical context

  • The district’s boundaries and administrative functions derived from the territorial organization established during the communist period.
  • In 2000, Albania reorganized its local government structure, abolishing districts in favor of larger counties; the territory of the former Lezhë District became part of the newly formed Lezhë County.

Legacy

  • While the district no longer exists as an administrative unit, the term “Lezhë District” remains in use in historical references, statistical archives, and regional studies pertaining to the pre‑2000 period.
