Definition
Leyla Birlik (born 1974) is a Turkish Kurdish politician, former member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, and human‑rights activist known for her involvement with the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and advocacy for Kurdish rights.
Overview
Born in the Şırnak Province of southeastern Turkey, Birlik became active in civil society organizations focusing on women's and Kurdish issues. In the June 2015 general election she was elected to the Turkish parliament representing Şırnak for the HDP, a pro‑democratic and pro‑Kurdish political party. She was re‑elected in the November 2015 snap election.
Following the failed coup attempt in July 2016, the Turkish government intensified its crackdown on HDP politicians. Birlik was detained on 5 November 2016 and subsequently charged with alleged propaganda for a terrorist organization, among other accusations. In 2018, a court in Diyarbakır sentenced her to a term of imprisonment for “terrorist propaganda” and related offenses. She was released pending appeal in 2020 after a decision by the Constitutional Court highlighted procedural concerns regarding her detention. As of the latest publicly available information, Birlik continues to be a vocal critic of restrictions on political expression and advocates for the rights of Kurdish citizens and women in Turkey.
