Levizja Çohu

Levizja Çohu (Albanian for "Movement Rise Up!" or "Movement Wake Up!") is a non-governmental activist organization from Kosovo known for its advocacy against corruption, social injustices, and political mismanagement through direct action and public protests.

Overview Established in the mid-2000s, Levizja Çohu emerged in post-war Kosovo as a significant voice for accountability and transparency. The organization primarily focused on challenging perceived corruption within the government and the international administration in Kosovo, advocating for the protection of public assets, and promoting responsible governance. It became known for its innovative forms of protest, public awareness campaigns, and a strong emphasis on citizen engagement. Many individuals who were active in Levizja Çohu later played prominent roles in Kosovan politics, particularly within the Vetëvendosje! (Self-Determination!) movement, which itself started as a civic movement before transforming into a major political party.

Etymology/Origin The name "Levizja Çohu" is derived from the Albanian language. "Levizja" translates to "movement," signifying a collective effort or a social/political organization. "Çohu" is the imperative form of the verb "to rise," "to get up," or "to wake up," serving as a direct call to action for the populace to stand up against perceived wrongs. The organization was founded by a group of young activists and students in Kosovo, driven by a desire to address systemic issues and hold authorities accountable in the nascent state.
