Description
Leptopus chinensis is a shrub or small tree reaching heights of 1–3 m. The stems are slender and often branched. Leaves are opposite, elliptic to oblong, measuring 3–7 cm in length, with entire margins and a slightly glossy surface. Flowers are small, inconspicuous, and typically greenish‑yellow, arranged in axillary cymes. The fruit is a dehiscent capsule containing several seeds.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is native to East Asia, primarily reported from mainland China, including provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Hunan. It occupies forest edges, thickets, and rocky slopes, usually at elevations ranging from 200 to 1,500 m. Reports outside China are scarce; no reliable records indicate a naturalized presence in other regions.
Ecology
Leptopus chinensis grows in temperate to subtropical climates. It prefers well‑drained soils and can tolerate moderate shade. Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer, with fruiting following shortly thereafter. Specific pollinators or seed dispersal agents have not been documented in major botanical references.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Leptopus chinensis. National assessments in China do not list it as threatened, and it is generally considered to have a stable population within its native range. However, habitat loss due to deforestation and land conversion could potentially impact local populations.

Taxonomic Notes
The species was originally described by Daniel Oliver as Andrachne chinensis and later transferred to the genus Leptopus by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel. Synonyms include Andrachne chinensis Oliv. and Leptopus oculatus (formerly regarded as a separate species but now considered conspecific).
