Leo Varadkar

Leo Francis Varadkar (born 18 January 1979) is an Irish politician who has served as the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland from June 2017 to June 2020 and again from December 2022 to the present. He is a member of Fine Gael and has been the leader of the party since June 2020. Varadkar has also held the offices of Minister for Health (2014–2016), Minister for Social Protection (2016–2017), and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (2022–2023).

Early life and education
Leo Varadkar was born in Dublin, Ireland, to an Indian-born father, Ashok Varadkar, a gastroenterologist, and an Irish mother, Joan O'Brien, a teacher. He grew up in the suburb of Clontarf and attended the Catholic boys' school St. Michael's College. He studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB BCh) in 2001, and subsequently worked as a medical doctor, specializing in cardiology.

Political career

  • Local politics: Varadkar entered politics as a member of Fine Gael and was elected to Fingal County Council for the Howth–Malahide local electoral area in 2004, serving until 2007.

  • Dáil Éireann: He was elected to the Dáil Éireann (the lower house of the Irish parliament) as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin West constituency in the 2007 general election and has been re‑elected in subsequent elections (2011, 2016, 2020).
