Len Gaynor (born 10 March 1953) is an Irish former hurler and hurling manager. He played as a left wing‑forward for the Tipperary senior inter‑county team and is noted for his contributions at both club and county levels.
Early life and education
Gaynor was born in Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, Ireland. He attended local schools where he first became involved in Gaelic games, developing his hurling skills in the juvenile ranks.
Playing career
Club
Gaynor spent his club career with Kilruane MacDonaghs, a prominent club in North Tipperary. With Kilruane, he won multiple Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship titles, including the 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1985 championships. The club's success continued at provincial and national level, securing the Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship in 1985 and the All‑Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship in 1986.
Inter‑county
Gaynor first appeared on the inter‑county scene with the Tipperary minor team, winning the Munster Minor Hurling Championship in 1971. He progressed to the under‑21 side before making his senior debut during the 1972 championship. Over a decade‑long senior career, Gaynor collected a Munster Senior Hurling Championship medal (1971, as a non‑playing substitute) and a National Hurling League medal (1978–79). He also earned an All‑Ireland Senior Hurling Championship medal as a substitute in 1971.
Inter‑provincial
Gaynor was selected for the Munster inter‑provincial team, participating in the Railway Cup competition, though he did not secure a winning medal.
Management and coaching
Following retirement from playing, Gaynor turned to coaching and team management. He served as a selector for the Tipperary senior hurling team and later took charge as manager of the senior side from 2001 to 2002. In addition, he managed Tipperary’s under‑21 team, guiding them to an All‑Ireland Under‑21 Hurling Championship in 1995.
