Lemuel F. Smith

Lemuel F. Smith (November 22, 1890 – May 19, 1956) was an American lawyer, politician, and judge who served in various capacities in the Commonwealth of Virginia throughout the first half of the 20th century. He is particularly noted for his tenure as a Virginia State Senator and later as a judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit.

Early Life and Education

Lemuel Franklin Smith was born on November 22, 1890, in Albemarle County, Virginia. He pursued his higher education at the University of Virginia, where he earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. After completing his legal studies, Smith returned to Albemarle County to establish his practice.

Commonwealth's Attorney

Early in his career, Lemuel F. Smith served as the Commonwealth's Attorney for Albemarle County, a position he held for several years during the 1920s. In this role, he was responsible for prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the state.

Virginia State Senator

In 1932, Smith was elected to the Virginia State Senate, representing the 24th District (which included Albemarle and Greene Counties). He served multiple terms in the Senate until 1941. He was an influential voice in Virginia politics during a period of significant social and economic change, including the Great Depression and the lead-up to World War II.

Judicial Career

In 1941, Governor James H. Price appointed Smith to the bench as a judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Virginia. This circuit encompassed his home county of Albemarle, as well as Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, and Orange Counties. He served as a circuit court judge until his death in 1956.
