Lekan Balogun

Lekan Balogun, born October 17, 1942, and died March 14, 2024, was a Nigerian monarch who served as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland. His full title was Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II. Prior to his ascension to the throne, he was a distinguished politician, businessman, and academic.

Early Life and Education Born into the Balogun family in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Lekan Balogun received his early education in his hometown. He later pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, earning a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of London. He further obtained a Master's degree and a PhD in Economics from the same institution. His academic pursuits also included studies in various fields such as public administration, management, and global affairs.

His political career was notable. He served as a Senator representing the Oyo Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate from 1999 to 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) platform. He also held positions as a gubernatorial aspirant in Oyo State and played significant roles within various political parties.

Ascension to the Olubadan Throne The ascension to the Olubadan throne follows a well-established hierarchical system in Ibadan. Starting from Mogaji (head of a family compound), he progressed through various chieftaincy titles, including Jagun, Balogun, Otun Olubadan, and Osi Olubadan, among others, over several decades. Following the demise of his predecessor, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Lekan Balogun was formally installed as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland on March 11, 2022.
