The club is principally known for its men's football team, which competes in the Icelandic football league system, but it also fields teams in basketball, handball, and youth athletics.
History
The club was officially founded in 1998 as a result of the merger of several local youth sporting groups, with the aim of providing organized sports opportunities for residents of the western districts of Reykjavík. Since its establishment, Leiknir Reykjavík has focused on developing local talent through its extensive youth academy system.

Leiknir Reykjavík’s home ground is Leiknisvöllur, a modest stadium located in the Hvassaleiti neighbourhood of Reykjavík. The venue has a spectator capacity of approximately 1,500 and includes a grass playing surface, floodlighting, and basic amenities for players and officials.
Football
League participation – The men's football team has competed primarily in the 1. deild karla (the second tier of Icelandic football). The club achieved promotion to the Úrvalsdeild karla, Iceland’s top division, for the 2015 season, marking its first appearance at that level. Leiknir Reykjavík remained in the Úrvalsdeild for the 2015 and 2016 seasons before being relegated back to the 1. deild karla.
Achievements – While the club has not won major national titles, it has secured promotion to higher divisions on multiple occasions, most notably the 2014 promotion to the Úrvalsdeild. The team is recognized for its emphasis on youth development, regularly fielding players who progress to larger Icelandic clubs and, occasionally, the senior national team.
Youth development – Leiknir Reykjavík operates a comprehensive youth academy covering age groups from under‑8 to under‑19. The academy participates in national youth leagues and has produced several players who have been capped at various youth international levels for Iceland.

The basketball division competes in the Icelandic lower divisions, focusing on community participation and player development. The handball division similarly emphasizes local engagement and operates both men’s and women’s programs.
