The Leica T (Typ 701) is a digital mirrorless interchangeable‑lens camera (MILC) produced by Leica Camera AG. It was announced in September 2014 and entered the market later that year as Leica’s first compact system camera designed around a newly introduced lens mount.
Design and Construction
The Leica T features a minimalist, slab‑style body constructed from a combination of magnesium alloy and polycarbonate. The rear of the camera is dominated by a 3.0‑inch LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 920 000 dots; the model does not include an integrated electronic viewfinder. The camera’s dimensions are approximately 138 mm × 77 mm × 41 mm and it weighs roughly 500 g including battery.
Sensor and Image Processor
The T is equipped with a 16‑megapixel APS‑C (23.6 mm × 15.8 mm) CMOS sensor, paired with Leica’s own image‑processing engine. The sensor delivers a maximum resolution of 4928 × 3264 pixels. ISO sensitivity ranges from 100 to 12 500, and the camera offers a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 s.
Lens Mount and Optics
The camera uses the Leica T mount, a newly developed bayonet mount supporting lenses specifically designed for the system. Leica released a small lineup of T‑mount lenses, including a 23 mm f/2.0 prime, a 35 mm f/2.0 prime, and a 70–200 mm f/4.0 zoom. An optional Leica T‑to‑M adapter permits the use of Leica M‑mount rangefinder lenses on the T body, maintaining manual focus operation.
Autofocus and Shooting Performance
Autofocus is implemented via a contrast‑detect system with 49 selectable focus points. Continuous shooting is rated at up to 5 frames per second in JPEG mode. The camera can record Full‑HD video (1920 × 1080) at 30 fps, with optional support for 24 fps and 25 fps frame rates.
Connectivity and Additional Features
Built‑in Wi‑Fi enables wireless transfer of images to compatible smart devices and remote control via the Leica Camera app. The T includes a standard micro‑USB port for data transfer and charging. The camera does not provide in‑body image stabilization; stabilization is dependent on lens design.
Market Position and Succession
The Leica T was marketed as a premium compact system camera, positioned between Leica’s traditional rangefinder line and its emerging mirrorless offerings. It received mixed reviews, with praise for its build quality, colour rendition, and lens design, but criticism for the absence of an electronic viewfinder and limited lens ecosystem. In 2016, Leica introduced the Leica TL (Typ 701 II), an updated model featuring an electronic viewfinder, a slightly revised sensor, and expanded video capabilities, effectively succeeding the original T.
