Lawngtlai is a town and the administrative headquarters of Lawngtlai district in the Indian state of Mizoram. Located in the southern part of the state, the town lies near the border with Bangladesh and the Indian state of Assam. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 800 meters (2,624 feet) above sea level and is traversed by the Tuichhuah River.
Geography and Climate
Lawngtlai is positioned at latitude 22°45′N and longitude 92°35′E. The region experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by warm, wet summers and mild, relatively dry winters. Annual rainfall is high, reflecting the monsoonal patterns typical of Mizoram.
Administrative Status
Established as a separate district in 1998, Lawngtlai district was carved out of the former Chakma Autonomous District Council area. The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner, who oversees local governance, law enforcement, and developmental initiatives.
Demographics
According to the 2011 Census of India, the urban agglomeration of Lawngtlai had a population of roughly 12,000 inhabitants. The majority of residents belong to various tribal communities, including the Lai, Chakma, and other ethnic groups native to the region. The official language of the state is Mizo, while Chakma, Lai, and other local languages are commonly spoken in the town.
Economy and Infrastructure
The economy of Lawngtlai is primarily based on agriculture, with rice, maize, and horticultural crops cultivated in surrounding areas. Small-scale trade and public sector employment also contribute to local livelihoods. The town is connected by road to Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, via National Highway 54. A bus depot and limited rail connectivity facilitate regional transport. Educational facilities include a range of primary and secondary schools, as well as a college offering undergraduate programmes.

Lawngtlai hosts cultural events reflective of its diverse ethnic composition, such as traditional festivals celebrated by the Lai and Chakma communities. Religious practices in the town encompass Christianity, Buddhism, and indigenous belief systems.
