Lavinia Agache

Lavinia Agache (born February 11, 1968) is a retired Romanian artistic gymnast. She was a key member of the dominant Romanian national team during the early to mid-1980s, known for her powerful performances, particularly on vault and uneven bars. She is an Olympic gold medalist and a multiple World and European Championship medalist.

Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Agache began her international career in the early 1980s, quickly establishing herself as a formidable competitor. She was part of a strong generation of Romanian gymnasts who challenged the traditional Soviet dominance in the sport.

1983 World Championships

At the 1983 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Agache had a highly successful outing, earning four medals:

1984 Los Angeles Olympics

Agache was a central figure of the Romanian women's artistic gymnastics team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States. The Romanian team achieved a historic victory, winning the gold medal in the team competition. This marked the first time the Soviet Union had been defeated in an Olympic women's team competition since 1952. Individually, Agache also secured a bronze medal on the vault apparatus.

Post-Gymnastics Career

After retiring from competitive gymnastics, Lavinia Agache immigrated to the United States. She has since been involved in coaching gymnastics.
