Laurence Cummings

Laurence Cummings (born 1968) is a British organist, conductor, and music director known for his work in the performance of Baroque repertoire, particularly that of George Frideric Handel. He has held prominent positions in both ecclesiastical and concert settings and is a regular figure in the United Kingdom’s early‑music scene.

Early life and education
Cummings was born in England in 1968. He studied organ and choral directing at the Royal Academy of Music, where he earned his postgraduate diploma. He also received training as an organ scholar at King's College, Cambridge, and later completed further studies in performance practice and conducting.

Career

Organist and Director of Music

  • From 1998 to 2008, Cummings served as Director of Music at Southwark Cathedral, overseeing the cathedral’s music programme, directing the choir, and performing as the principal organist.
