Laura Zúñiga

Laura Elena Zúñiga Huizar (born January 3, 1985) is a Mexican model and beauty queen who gained international notoriety in late 2008 due following her arrest on charges related to organized crime.

Early Life and Beauty Pageants Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Zúñiga began her career in beauty pageants. She achieved national prominence by winning the title of Nuestra Belleza Sinaloa 2008, which qualified her to compete in the national Nuestra Belleza México pageant. She further won the title of Nuestra Belleza México International 2008, earning the right to represent Mexico at the Miss International 2009 competition. In October 2008, Zúñiga participated in the Reina Hispanoamericana pageant in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where she was awarded the title of "Queen of the Americas" and finished as the first runner-up.

Arrest and Controversy On December 22, 2008, Zúñiga was arrested in Zapopan, Jalisco, by the Mexican Army and federal police. She was apprehended alongside seven men, including her boyfriend, Ángel Orlando García Urquiza, who was identified as the brother of a notorious Juárez Cartel leader. The group was found in two vehicles, allegedly carrying high-caliber weapons (including AR-15 rifles), ammunition, and approximately $53,000 in U.S. currency. Authorities accused Zúñiga of being involved with drug trafficking and organized crime, specifically linking her to the Sinaloa Cartel. Her arrest generated significant media attention both in Mexico and internationally, casting a spotlight on the perceived links between beauty pageants and drug cartels.

Aftermath Following her arrest, Zúñiga was stripped of her beauty titles by the Nuestra Belleza México organization and the Miss International pageant. She was formally removed from her position as Nuestra Belleza México International 2008 and her anticipated participation in Miss International 2009 was revoked. She was held in prison while investigations proceeded. However, Zúñiga was released on January 30, 2009, after a judge found insufficient evidence to directly link her to drug trafficking or organized crime activities. She maintained her innocence throughout the ordeal, claiming she was unaware of her boyfriend's illicit activities and was a victim of circumstances.

Cultural Impact The highly publicized case of Laura Zúñiga became a symbol of the pervasive influence of drug cartels in various aspects of Mexican society, including those traditionally associated with glamour and public image. Her story reportedly served as an inspiration for the fictional Netflix series Rosario Tijeras and was also referenced in other media portrayals of organized crime in Mexico.
