Lanterman House

The Lanterman House is a historic house museum located in La Cañada Flintridge, California. Built in 1915 by Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Lanterman, it is a significant example of Craftsman-style architecture, incorporating elements of Spanish Colonial Revival design popular in Southern California during the early 20th century. The house and its surrounding 3.5-acre property are recognized for their historical and architectural importance, serving as a cultural landmark and a center for community activities.

History

Dr. Ralph Lanterman, a dentist and prominent citizen, purchased the land in 1913. Construction of the house began in 1914 and was completed in 1915. The Lantermans played a vital role in the development of the Crescenta Valley area, and their home became a social hub. The property originally included extensive grounds, a stable, and various gardens. Dr. Lanterman's wife, Amabel, was particularly involved in the design and interior decoration of the home. The Lanterman family resided in the house for over 60 years. In 1976, the property was purchased by the City of La Cañada Flintridge, which then established the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation to preserve and operate it as a museum.

Architecture

The Lanterman House is a distinctive representation of the Arts and Crafts movement, characterized by its use of natural materials, exposed wooden beams, and a harmonious integration with its natural surroundings. Key architectural features include:

  • Materials: Extensive use of redwood and local stones.
  • Roofline: A low-pitched, broad roof with deep eaves, typical of the Craftsman style.
  • Windows: Numerous large windows and French doors designed to maximize natural light and views of the surrounding gardens.
  • Interior: Features hand-carved woodwork, built-in cabinetry, and original furnishings that reflect the period. The layout emphasizes flow and openness, with a large living room, dining room, and sun porch.
  • Spanish Colonial Revival Influence: While primarily Craftsman, elements such as the tile roof and some of the garden features hint at the burgeoning Spanish Colonial Revival style.

Current Use and Significance

Today, the Lanterman House operates as a house museum, offering guided tours that provide insight into the lives of the Lanterman family and the history of La Cañada Flintridge. The property also hosts various public events, educational programs, and community gatherings, including concerts, lectures, and historical reenactments.

The Lanterman House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, recognizing its exceptional historical and architectural significance. It stands as a well-preserved example of early 20th-century Southern California residential architecture and an important educational resource for understanding the region's cultural heritage. The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation is dedicated to its ongoing preservation and interpretation.
