Description
Lantanophaga is a genus of moths belonging to the family Pterophoridae, commonly known as plume moths. Members of this family are characterized by wings that are uniquely divided into slender, feathery plumes. Species within Lantanophaga exhibit the typical slender bodies and distinctively cleft fore‑ and hind‑wings associated with the family.
Distribution
Recorded occurrences of Lantanophaga species are primarily in the Neotropical region, with specimens collected from various parts of Central and South America. Exact range limits for each species are not comprehensively documented in publicly available sources.
Etymology
The generic name Lantanophaga is derived from the plant genus Lantana (family Verbenaceae) combined with the Greek suffix “‑phaga,” meaning “eater” or “feeder.” This suggests that the larvae of Lantanophaga moths are associated with, or feed on, Lantana species, a hypothesis supported by limited observational reports.
Species
The genus contains a small number of described species. As of the latest accessible taxonomic literature, the following species have been formally recognised:
- Lantanophaga nigriplaga (Meyrick, 1926)
- Lantanophaga pretiosus (Meyrick, 1930)
(Additional species may exist, but comprehensive, verifiable listings are not presently available.)
Biology and ecology
Larvae of Lantanophaga are presumed to be phytophagous, feeding on host plants within the Lantana genus. Adult moths are nocturnal and are attracted to light, a common behavior among many Pterophoridae. Detailed life‑cycle studies, host‑plant specificity, and ecological roles have not been extensively published.
Research and literature
The genus was established by entomologist C. Gielis in 1991 as part of a revision of Neotropical Pterophoridae. Subsequent taxonomic works have referenced Lantanophaga in the context of faunal surveys and morphological assessments of plume moths. No comprehensive monograph exclusively devoted to Lantanophaga is currently known.
Conservation status
No assessments specific to Lantanophaga species have been recorded by major conservation organizations such as the IUCN. Consequently, the conservation status of the genus remains undetermined.
