Lance Gibbs

Lance Gibbs (born 6 September 1931) is a former Antiguan cricketer who represented the West Indies in international Test cricket as a right‑arm off‑spin bowler. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful spin bowlers in West Indian cricket history.

Early life and domestic career
Born in St. John's, Antigua, Gibbs began playing cricket at a young age and later moved to England to play league cricket, where he honed his off‑spin technique. He made his first‑class debut for the Leeward Islands in 1958 and subsequently played for the Combined Islands team in the West Indian domestic competition.

International career
Gibbs made his Test debut for the West Indies against India on 30 January 1959 at Bridgetown, Barbados. Over a career spanning 1959–1969, he played 49 Test matches, taking 309 wickets at an average of 27.41. His achievements include:

  • Becoming the first West Indian bowler to reach 300 Test wickets.
  • Recording 14 five‑wicket hauls and two ten‑wicket matches in Tests.
  • Maintaining an economy rate of 2.02 runs per over, reflecting his accuracy and control.

Gibbs was a key component of the West Indian bowling attack during the 1960s, complementing fast bowlers such as Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith. His most notable performances include 6 for 71 against England at Lord’s in 1966 and 6 for 70 against Australia at Sydney in 1965.

Style of play
Gibbs bowled a classical off‑spin delivery, relying on flight, subtle variation, and a consistently tight line and length. His ability to maintain a low run rate made him especially effective on slower, turning pitches. He was also a competent lower‑order batsman, scoring two half‑centuries in Test cricket, with a top score of 55.

Later life and legacy
After retiring from international cricket in 1969, Gibbs continued to be involved in the sport as a coach and mentor in Antigua, contributing to the development of younger cricketers. In 2009, he was inducted into the West Indies Cricket Hall of Fame. As of the latest available information, Gibbs resides in Antigua and remains a respected figure in Caribbean cricket circles.
