The area now known as Lambton was originally inhabited by the Awabakal Aboriginal people. European settlement began in the early 19th century, with the land initially allocated for agricultural purposes. Coal mining became a dominant industry in the latter half of the 1800s, leading to the establishment of the Lambton Colliery in 1868. The suburb’s name derives from Lambton, County Durham, England, reflecting the practice of naming Australian locales after British places.
Lambton was officially gazetted as a suburb in the early 20th century. The Lambton railway station, opened in 1887 on the Main Northern line, facilitated commuter and freight transport, contributing to residential growth. Following the decline of coal mining in the mid‑20th century, the suburb transitioned to a predominantly residential character.
