Lake Vârșolț (Romanian: Lacul de acumulare Vârșolț) is an artificial reservoir located in Sălaj County, Transylvania, Romania. It is the largest lake in Sălaj County and plays a crucial role in the region's water management.
Geography and Location
The lake is situated in the north-western part of Sălaj County, approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north of the county seat, Zalău. It was formed by damming the Crasna River, a tributary of the Tisza River. The reservoir is named after the nearby village of Vârșolț, which lies to its south.
Construction and Purpose
Construction of the Vârșolț Dam and reservoir began in the 1970s and was completed in 1979. The primary purposes of Lake Vârșolț are:
- Water Supply: It serves as the main source of potable water for the city of Zalău and several surrounding communes, as well as providing industrial water.
- Flood Control: The reservoir helps regulate the flow of the Crasna River, preventing floods in the downstream areas, particularly in the Crasna Valley.
- Irrigation: In some periods, its waters are used for agricultural irrigation.
Characteristics
Lake Vârșolț has the following key characteristics:
- Surface Area: Approximately 600 hectares (6 square kilometers or 2.3 square miles) at its maximum level.
- Volume: It has a total storage capacity of around 46.5 million cubic meters of water.
- Dam: The dam is an earth-fill structure, featuring a spillway and various water intake and outlet facilities.
Ecology and Recreation
The lake and its surrounding areas provide habitat for various species of birds and fish. It is a popular spot for fishing, with common species including carp, pike, perch, and zander. While not a major tourist destination, its natural setting attracts local residents for leisure activities like boating (non-motorized) and picnicking along its shores. The management of the lake's water levels is carefully balanced between its primary functions and environmental considerations.
