Lake Raschera (Italian: Lago Raschera) is an alpine lake situated at an elevation of 2,108 m (6,919 ft) above sea level in the Ligurian Alps of north‑west Italy. The lake lies within the administrative boundaries of the comune of Magliano Alpi in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont, and is located in the upper valley of the Corsaglia river.
Geography and Hydrology
The lake occupies a basin encircled by several peaks, including Cima Ferlette, Cima della Brignola, and Monte Mongioie. Its waters give rise to the Rio Raschera, a tributary that flows into the Rio Sbornina and subsequently joins the Corsaglia river system. The surrounding terrain is characterized by high‑altitude pastures and rugged mountain slopes.
Historical and Cultural Context
The area surrounding Lake Raschera has been renowned for centuries for the quality of its alpine pastures, which support the production of notable dairy products. In particular, the region lends its name to the Raschera DOP cheese, a locally protected designation of origin cheese celebrated for its flavor and traditional methods of production.
Recreation and Access
Lake Raschera is accessible to hikers via a footpath that begins at the Rifugio Balma mountain hut. An agrarian trail leads from the lower reaches of the Corsaglia valley to the vicinity of the lake. Additionally, a mountain trail that traverses the Bocchino della Brignola connects Lake Raschera with the nearby Lake Brignola, offering routes for both day hikes and extended trekking.
