Lake Maraetai

Definition
Lake Maraetai is a man‑made reservoir on the Waikato River in the North Island of New Zealand, created by the construction of the Maraetai Dam as part of the Waikato hydroelectric power scheme.

Overview
The lake lies approximately 80 km southeast of Auckland, spanning the boundaries of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. It serves multiple functions: hydroelectric generation, water storage for downstream regulation, and recreation (including fishing, boating, and tourism). The reservoir is one of several lakes formed along the Waikato River, linking the upstream Lake Karapiro to downstream Lake Waipapa.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Maraetai” is derived from the Māori language, where marae refers to a communal or ceremonial gathering place and tai means “sea” or “tidal water.” In this context, the term is interpreted as “the meeting place by the water,” reflecting the historical significance of the site to local iwi (tribes) before the dam’s construction.

Characteristics

  • Surface area: Approximately 4.5 km² (variable with water level).
  • Maximum depth: About 30 m near the dam wall.
  • Volume: Roughly 57 million m³ of stored water.
  • Dam specifications: Maraetai Dam is a concrete gravity dam, 87 m high and 300 m long, equipped with three Kaplan‑type turbines producing a combined capacity of about 360 MW.
  • Hydrology: The lake’s water level is regulated to support downstream power stations, maintain ecological flow, and provide flood mitigation. Seasonal fluctuations are typical, with higher levels in winter and early spring.
  • Ecology: The reservoir supports native fish species such as īnanga (whitebait) and introduced trout, and its shoreline hosts mixed native forest and pastureland. Ongoing monitoring addresses issues of sedimentation and invasive plant species.
  • Recreation: Public access points at Maraetai Dam and nearby towns allow for picnicking, kayaking, and angling; a short walking track offers views of the dam and surrounding landscape.
