Lakavica, Gostivar

Lakavica (Macedonian: Лакавица) is a small lake and wetland situated near the town of Gostivar in the Polog region of north‑western North Macedonia. The lake lies at an elevation of approximately 690 m (2,264 ft) above sea level and covers an area of roughly 0.2 km² (0.08 sq mi). It is part of the Lakavica Nature Reserve, which was established to protect the area's diverse flora and fauna, particularly its avian populations.

Geography and hydrology
Lakavica is fed primarily by underground springs and seasonal runoff from the surrounding hills. The lake is shallow, with a maximum depth of about 2 m (6.5 ft). Its waters are fresh, though periods of drying can occur during prolonged droughts, leading to fluctuations in surface area.

Ecology
The wetland environment supports a range of plant species, including reeds (Phragmites australis), bulrushes (Scirpus spp.), and various submerged macrophytes. Lakavica is an important stopover and wintering site for migratory birds, such as waders, ducks, and raptors. Notable bird species recorded in the reserve include the Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Eurasian bittern (Botaurus stellaris), and various species of herons and egrets. The lake also provides habitat for amphibians, insects, and small fish.

Conservation status
The Lakavica Nature Reserve is designated under national legislation for the protection of natural habitats and the conservation of biodiversity. Management measures include monitoring of water quality, regulation of fishing and hunting activities, and the promotion of ecotourism. The reserve is recognized as a valuable component of the broader network of protected wetlands in the Balkans.

Human use and access
The vicinity of Lakavica is accessible via local roads linking Gostivar to surrounding villages. The area is utilized for limited recreational fishing, birdwatching, and nature education. Local authorities have established signage and observation points to facilitate sustainable visitor engagement while minimizing disturbance to wildlife.
