Lak Hok (Thai: หลักหก, pronounced [làk hòk]) is a tambon (sub-district) in Mueang Pathum Thani district, Pathum Thani province, within the Bangkok Metropolitan Region of Thailand.
Etymology
The name "Lak Hok" means "sixth milepost." It refers to the sixth milepost of Khlong Prem Prachakon, a canal dug during the reign of King Rama V that connects downtown Bangkok to Bang Pa-in district in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The canal flows through the area.
History
In the Ayutthaya period, the area around Lak Hok was used to grow rice and sugarcane to feed royal elephants. During the Rattanakosin period, the area was abandoned. In King Rama IV's reign, Phra Phison Sombat Boribun, a courtier of the Kromma Tha Sai (the department of Chinese affairs in Siam), brought Chinese settlers to pioneer sugarcane cultivation, including building a sugarcane mill. The area later shifted to rice cultivation. Lak Hok was upgraded to a sub-district municipality from the sub-district administrative organization (TAO) on August 24, 2007.
Geography
The terrain is lowland with the Chao Phraya River running through the middle, separated into many canals and waterways. Lak Hok is located 5 km from the city of Pathum Thani and 32 km from Bangkok, with a total area of approximately 11.7 km². Adjacent areas include Bang Phun, Prachathipat, Khu Khot, Si Kan, and Ban Mai.
Demographics
The area has a total population of approximately 21,704 (10,242 men, 11,462 women) across 11,588 households, with an average density of 1,855 people per km². The local population is engaged in agriculture, employment, civil service, and trading.
Administration
Lak Hok is governed by the Lak Hok Sub-District Municipality and is divided into seven administrative mubans (villages).
Transportation
The sub-district is served by the SRT Dark Red Line (State Railway of Thailand) with the Lak Hok (Rangsit University) station, which opened on August 2, 2021. It is also accessible via the Khu Khot BTS Skytrain station nearby. The area was formerly served by the Lak Hok railway halt on the Northern and Northeastern Lines, but this was permanently deactivated on September 15, 2020, due to replacement by the SRT Dark Red Line.
Education
Lak Hok has three government schools and four private schools. Rangsit University (RSU) is the local higher education institution.
