Geography
Lagoa da Confusão lies within the microregion of Médio Parnaíba and is situated near the border with the state of Maranhão. The terrain is part of the semi‑arid Sertão, featuring rolling hills and shallow depressions, some of which contain seasonal lagoons that give the municipality its name (“Lagoa da Confusão” translates to “Confusion Lagoon”). The climate is classified as tropical semi‑arid (BSh), with a marked dry season and an average annual precipitation of around 600 mm (23.6 in).
History
The settlement originated in the early 20th century as a small agricultural community. It was officially recognized as a district of the neighboring municipality of Curral Novo de Rondônia in 1948. Lagoa da Confusão achieved municipal status on 23 June 1991, following a state law that separated it from the municipality of Pimentel. The name is traditionally attributed to a local lagoon whose irregular shape and fluctuating water levels caused confusion among early travelers.
Administration
The municipal government is headed by a mayor (prefeito) elected for a four‑year term, who oversees local executive functions. The municipal council (câmara de vereadores) comprises councilors elected through proportional representation. Lagoa da Confusão is part of the state legislative district of Piauí and falls within the federal electoral district for the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

Public sector employment, particularly in education and health services, constitutes a significant source of jobs.
