Lachlan Maurice McNeil (born January 19, 2001) is a Canadian freestyle and folkstyle wrestler who competes at 65 kilograms (143 lb). He is a silver medalist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a two-time Canadian Senior Freestyle national champion.
Early Life and Background
McNeil was born in Bahrain on January 19, 2001. His father, Calum McNeil, competed in men's freestyle wrestling for Great Britain at the 1992 Summer Olympics. His younger brother, Gregor McNeil, also competes internationally for Canada and attends McMaster University.
Freestyle Career
McNeil has won two Canadian Freestyle national titles, earning the right to represent Canada at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, he won a silver medal. He also earned a bronze medal at the 2022 Grand Prix of Spain and a gold medal at the 2023 Madrid Grand Prix.
In 2024, McNeil competed at the Pan American Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, seeking to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, but was eliminated in his third match.
At the U20 level, he won a gold medal at the 2021 U20 Pan American Championships in Oaxtepec, Mexico.
College Career
McNeil wrestled collegiately for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he became an NCAA All-American at the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. He finished third at the 2023 ACC Wrestling Championships. He later transferred to the University of Michigan, where he competed during the 2025–2026 season and earned All-America status once again at the NCAA Championships.
In June 2026, McNeil won the 70 kg title at the Canadian Non-Olympic Weight Class Trials, qualifying for the 2026 UWW Senior World Championships.
Personal Life
McNeil stands 1.72 m (5 ft 8 in) tall and weighs 65 kg (143 lb). He has been coached by Coleman Scott, Tony Ramos, Jamill Kelly, and Mohamed Abdelfatah. He has wrestled for the Tar Heel Wrestling Club and Team Impact Wrestling Club in Canada.
