History
The area where LaCoste now stands was originally part of a large ranch owned by Jean-Baptiste LaCoste, a French immigrant. The community began its formation in 1898 when the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway (a component of the Southern Pacific Railroad) extended its line through the region. The railway company purchased land from LaCoste's heirs, platted a townsite, and established a station, naming both the station and the nascent community "LaCoste" in his honor.
With the advent of the railroad, LaCoste quickly developed into a vital shipping point for the agricultural produce of the surrounding rural areas, primarily cotton, corn, and other crops. A post office was established in 1898, and by the early 20th century, the town boasted several general stores, churches, and a school, serving as a local commercial and social hub. The population experienced steady growth throughout the first half of the 20th century. LaCoste was officially incorporated as a city in 1969.
