La Pegatina is a Spanish rumba-rock band formed in 2003 in Montcada i Reixac, Catalonia. Renowned for their high-energy live performances and a vibrant fusion of musical genres, the band has become a prominent fixture in the mestizaje (fusion) music scene, gaining widespread popularity across Europe and beyond.
History
The band was founded in 2003 under the initial name "Pegatina Sound System" before adopting "La Pegatina." From their inception in the Barcelona metropolitan area, they quickly garnered attention for their lively performances at local venues and festivals. Demonstrating an early independent spirit, they released their debut studio album, Al Carrer! (2007), for free download, a move that significantly contributed to their rapid ascent in the Spanish music landscape. The album featured popular tracks like "Marihuana."
Following the success of their debut, La Pegatina continued to develop their distinctive sound. Subsequent albums such as Via Mandarina (2009) and Eureka! (2013) further cemented their reputation for expertly blending diverse musical styles with infectious rhythms and memorable melodies. Their growing popularity led to extensive international tours, taking their music across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, where they cultivated a substantial global fanbase.
Throughout their career, the band has consistently produced new material, including Revulsiu (2015), Ahora o Nunca (2018), Darle la vuelta (2020), and Hacia Otra Parte (2022). They have collaborated with numerous artists from various countries, further enriching their multicultural sound and expanding their artistic reach.
Musical Style and Influences
La Pegatina's music is characterized by a dynamic blend of genres, primarily rooted in Catalan rumba and rock. This core is richly augmented with elements of ska, cumbia, merengue, reggae, pop, and punk, creating a unique and highly danceable sound.
