La Nucia is a municipality located in the province of Alicante, within the Valencian Community on the eastern coast of Spain. It is situated in the comarca (district) of Marina Baixa, approximately 10 kilometers north of the coastal resort city of Benidorm and 3 kilometers inland from the Mediterranean Sea.
Geography and Location The municipality covers an area of approximately 21 square kilometers. Its topography is characterized by its position in a fruit-growing valley at the foothills of the Aitana mountain range. The town is situated on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean, providing views of the surrounding coastline and mountains. It borders the municipalities of Altea, Callosa d'en Sarrià, Benidorm, Polop, and L'Alfàs del Pi.
History The name "La Nucia" is believed to be derived from the Arabic word Naziha, which translates to "pleasant" or "delicious." Historically, the area was a farmhouse during the period of Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula. Following the Christian Reconquista, the land was granted to various noble families. La Nucia was originally part of the barony of Polop but gained independence as a separate municipality in 1705.
Demographics La Nucia has experienced significant population growth since the late 20th century, largely due to urban development and the influx of foreign residents. Like many municipalities in the Costa Blanca region, it hosts a diverse international population, with a substantial percentage of residents originating from Northern and Western European countries, particularly the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Culture and Landmarks The town center maintains traditional Mediterranean architectural features, including narrow streets and white-washed houses. Key landmarks include the Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception and the Mediterranean Cultural Center (Auditori de la Mediterrània), which serves as a venue for performing arts and exhibitions. The town also hosts a weekly open-air market (Rastro), which is one of the largest in the region.
